Coach Nick

Currently, Coach Nick volunteers and mentors individuals at Kernan Hospital (now known as the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute) on the Spinal Cord Injury Unit (SCI Unit) and in Recreational Therapy. At Kernan, he educates patients about their disability and the need to now create a "new normal." Coach Nick instructs them on basic life skills such as dressing, hygiene, nutrition/diet and assimilating back into society. As a volunteer, he is also trained to be patient and listen in an effort to help patients deal with the physical and emotional challenges. Coach Nick is certified by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation which allows him to travel to mentor and train.

Each week, he volunteers his time at Coldstream Park Elementary/Middle School mentoring students. His two daughters, elementary and middle school age, live with him on the weekends and he engages them in educational and physical training exercises.

In middle school and high school, Coach Nick always had a passion and drive for education and sports. Upon graduation from Forest Park Senior High School in 2000, where he played football, he decided to tie this experience into his plans for college. He attended Coppin State University where he declared Elementary Education and Sports Management as his major.

It was not until he became a patient at Kernan Hospital in 2008 where he overcame various obstacles with his disability. This triumph allowed him to reenter the community and continue to achieve his goals that included continuing his education, developing a career and becoming a vital asset to the community. Through his journey, his disability no longer became a burden but an opportunity to achieve and give back.

Through the EAST SIDE COLTS YOUTH FOOTBALL PROGRAM, Coach Nick and the coaches hope to serve as inspiration and role models to the male youth participating with the team.
